In Shmita year, the farmer is commanded to give up the harvest and leave it unattended, so anyone can gather it from the field without payment.
“Let the needy among your people eat, and what they leave, the wild animals shall eat.,,You shall do the same with your vineyards and your olive groves”. (Exodus 23:11)
